I recieved an email with several ARC offers in it a little while ago, Paper Princess was one of them that caught my eye. I loved it so much I offered the authors behind ERIN WATT an opportunity to come and talk about the release. Here is their post talking about the GORGEOUS cover! ~HP
The design of the cover was almost as much of a journey as the writing of the book. When we were done writing Paper Princess and knew we wanted to make a trilogy out of the story, we started looking for a cover that spoke to both YA and adult readers. We needed something eye-catching, fun, different…
We ended up contacting (and later driving up a wall) our friend Meljean Brook (an amazing author in her own right) with our many, many ideas, but in the end she delivered! We found an image that we LOVED, but we needed 3 covers. We ended up going to Jen’s husband, who is a terrific artist, and begged for help. He sketched the art for the covers on Paper Princess and Twisted Palace.
We finally had a cover for the book! We loved them. Nina, our publicist, loved them. Our early reader, Margo, loved them. We patted ourselves on the back and delved back into the story.
Then a wrinkle in plan emerged. We sent the book and the cover off to our editor. The response came back: Your cover doesn’t fit the book.
Devastated may be the best way to explain how we felt. Not only did we love the cover, but the thought of returning to the drawing board and sifting through all the stock art again… as fun as one may think looking through art to complete our project might be, after a while it’s a bit… soul sucking.
We started polling friends and family members and most of them agreed with our editor. The dark cover with the gold overlay and the scripty font made it look like a fantasy book. We had to come up with a new concept.
We dived onto Instagram and Pinterest and stock photo sites, hoping for some kind of inspiration. We resumed emailing poor Meljean (we apologize again for the 80-email-long-threads!) until she came through with another concept that was perfect.
The final covers for the series exceeded our expectations. We’re even more in love with these ones than the originals! They’re fresh, modern, and oh so pretty!
And now…we can stop pouring over stock photos and torturing our cover artist, and return to writing the sequels ☺
